The project begins with the observation of what lies beneath the surface, focusing on what we do not immediately see, but that shapes a its possibilities: the invisible. By understanding its history, I saw how the site became what it is today, abandoned and polluted. I asked myself how to act on this invisible layer. I found an answer in compost and biochar: compost from organic waste, biochar from biomass. Together, they clean the soil, support microbial life and block heavy metals. Infrastructures are reconfigured to support the environment. People are already there, inhabiting a space that is still evolving. This is not a project that waits to be complete to be used; it is a space that invites us to live inside transformation, and to let the invisible become generative.

Alternde Bevölkerung, zunehmende Anonymität durch fehlende soziale Infrastruktur und ein hoher Anteil an Zweitwohnungen: Dies führt zu einem Verlust an sozialem Zusammenhalt. Ein Beispiel für ein solches Dorf ist Tartar im Kanton Graubünden. Wir haben Bewohner besucht und zu ihre Wünschen, Sorgen und Hoffnungen befragt. Trotz aller Unterschiede verband sie ein Wunsch: mehr Gemeinschaft. Im Zentrum unseres Projekts steht ein leerstehender Stall, den wir Akropolis nennen. Es handelt sich um einen Heustall aus den siebziger Jahren mit offener Rahmenstruktur – der geräumigste und flexibelste Stall in Tartar. Unser Projekt versteht Gemeinschaft nicht nur als Ziel, sondern als architektonische Haltung. Die Akropolis wird zu einem sozialen Treffpunkt und einer lokalen Energiequelle – ein Beispiel dafür, wie sozialer Zusammenhalt gefördert, Ressourcen geschont und kulturelles Erbe weiterentwickelt werden kann. Das Projekt zeigt das transformative Potenzial von Tartars Ställen und Straßen für eine zukunftsfähige, gemeinschaftlich getragene Dorfkultur.

Ausgangspunkt ist die intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem besonderen Charakter des Westquais in Basel – ein Ort, geprägt von industrieller Nutzung, ephemeren Architektur und stetigem Wandel. Aus dieser Beobachtung entwickelt sich das Leitbild eines „Lagers für Räume“ – ein flexibles, dynamisches städtebauliches Konzept, das dem Ort gerecht wird und Zukunftsperspektiven eröffnet. Es gelingt der Arbeit, vorhandene Strukturen aufzugreifen und weiterzudenken. Die Blockrandstruktur des angrenzenden Klybeckquartiers wird aufgenommen, öffnet sich jedoch in Richtung Rhein. Silos bleiben als identitätsstiftende Hochpunkte erhalten. Neue Verbindungen – insbesondere die Brücke nach Frankreich und die Verbindung zum Ostquai – verankern die Insel in ihrer Umgebung. Der Lagerplatz zwischen den Silos wird als wandelbarer, offener Raum erhalten.

The rapidly growing settlement area in the Limmat Valley is increasingly coming into conflict with existing infrastructure, logistics and agriculture areas. Hybrid programmes can be used to generate higher density and synergies. The large area of Spreitenbach’s SBB marshalling yard is an area of considerable potential to introduce renewable energy on an existing infrastructure and to supplement it with further programmes. The marshalling yard will be expanded to include a solar and biogas power plant. Parabolic mirrors concentrate the direct solar radiation on a single point, generating process heat for the nearby industry and supporting its decarbonisation. The exposed location of the railway station allows algae to be cultivated in photobioreactors, which quickly produce large quantities of biomass. This biomass can be converted into biogas and then into electricity and process heat. Parts of the site can be transformed into a landscape park, characterised by microclimate-specific vegetation.

In summer 2023, the European Commission announced the biggest single real estate operation in the history of Brussels: to sell 50% of its buildings. In order to achieve the goal for climate neutrality by 2030, the EC is in fact abandoning their allegedly «underperforming» building stock, bundled in one portfolio of 350.000 m². Ode to Joy proposes an alternative to the commercialization of institutional space by implementing a leasehold system for the sales process: The state gets to keep the land while dwellers will own their homes just the EC will own its offices. The plotting of commercial against social function is turned around. Focusing on îlot 130, a building block at the intersection of the residential and institutional axis of the European quarter, the programme combines the offices of the institution with dwellings and the Brussels Centre for Urban Studies. Office space is reduced to 50%, creating over 30% housing, most of which is far below market price.

At the corner of Limmatstrasse and Sihlquai, at the beginning of Zurich’s Kreis 5, a car parking, a car wash street and petrol station – originally intended to be only provisional – need to be adapted to current and future needs. The project proposes to rearrange the modular structure and add new components to create a place for housing. By interweaving the structure into the existing building fabric, the car infrastructure is kept as a layer of the site’s palimpsest. A crane at the center of the perimeter redistributes the components to adapt the existing building’s fabric and to create building volumes suited for dwelling. In this process each existing mushroom column is equipped with a plinth to reach a floor height suited for housing. Further elements, such as a facade, stairs and service cores, are added, working with plug-on and plug-in components. Thus, the initial circular idea of the car parking structure remains preserved for a new era.

For thousands of years, the German coastal lands have been tormented by the North Sea. During the past eight centuries, their residents have been building and maintaining dykes, to protect settlements and agriculture from the power of angry storm surges. But rising sea levels and the reality of climate change is rendering this infrastructure, which has grown far beyond a construction project and embedded itself at the heart into everyday life, excessive and futile.

The Thesis proposes a daring almost reckless alternative to the conventional raising of dikes, by instead breaking this very barrier at strategic points to initiate sediment soil growth along the European North Sea coast.

Within the scenario of semi-annual floods, a new spatial and programmatic paradigm is developed, layering marine ecology with agriculture and tourism. The architectural expression dwells upon a possible new vernacular that equally caters for and poetically frames this landscape en mouvement.

The method of building large scale landscape models is based around extensive research in scientific fields of marine ecology and hydrological engineering, alongside more sociological and anthropological fieldwork visiting the remote yet specific sites and speaking extensively to members of the community.

An abandoned soviet hotel in the centre of Chisinau - the capital city of the Republic of Moldova - is being put under heritage protection after 15 years of demolition plans. While a welcome decision - the building being one of the most important examples of Soviet modernist architecture in the country - there is no vision for the future of the ensemble.

The project picks up the current physical, legal, and political situation of the hotel and - by comparing it to the current struggles of the country in the search for identity after the independence - proposes a vision where the society can come together and unite around. It picks up local elements, such as the still existing tradition of claca - the tradition of voluntarily building, planting and working together for a common goal - in order to create a new collective identity and overcome the divisive memories of the soviet past. The project doesn’t provide a definitive solution - as the future is currently too uncertain - but rather lays the first strategic stone for a process that is to develop.

Au nord de la Porte de la Villette, un hypermarché et un parking désaffectés, communément appelé « le Mausolée », s’insèrent transversalement sous la ceinture continue que constitue le boulevard périphérique, entre la ville-centre et le périurbain. Ce monolithe dissymétrique en béton a été construit en 1967, en même temps que le viaduc du périphérique dont il intègre la structure dans ses plateaux libres. Muré et impénétrable depuis l’expulsion de ses occupations informelles successives, le bâtiment se dresse tel un reliquat associé à l’automobile, en attente d’une démolition. Paris, Transit investit cette structure inerte en y créant une plateforme logistique du dernier kilomètre, une machine digestive capable d’absorber le flux de denrées alimentaires destinées à la vente et d’organiser leur acheminement décarboné vers l’intra- et l’extra-muros de la ville. 

In der Peripherie von Neuenburg sollen bestehende Gewerbehallen umgenutzt werden. Der Standort in einem anonymen Industriegebiet neben der Autobahn ist eine Herausforderung. Der Verfasser schlägt vor, einen bestehenden Hallenkomplex um neue Elemente zu ergänzen und darin Wohnungen sowie Büros unterzubringen. Interessant ist die Idee, einen Veloweg als Langsamverkehrsachse durch die grossvolumigen Hallenbauten hindurchzuführen.

Das Projekt umfasst verschiedene Massstäbe und Aspekte: von städtebaulich, programmatisch und konstruktiv bis hin zu Detaillösungen. Die Situation ist umfassend analysiert, die Ebenen sorgfältig durchdacht und dargestellt. Die Architektursprache der Interventionen baut auf dem nüchtern-funktionalen Architekturvokabular des Bestands auf.

Der Autor überzeugt mit der Bearbeitung eines komplexen wie relevanten Themas in einem durch seine Grösse anspruchsvollen Umbauprojekt.
